Congregational Covenant

Developing a Covenant of Right Relations is an important step in clarifying expectations and creating a safe environment for congregations. "Covenant" is Latin for "come together" and means a "solemn agreement" or "promise from the heart" regarding a course of action between parties.
UUCY began its first congregational covenant initiative in February this year.
Our Congregational Covenant was unanimously approved by a quorum of Active Members at our Fall Congregational Meeting on Sunday, September 28, 2014 at 11:30 AM:

As members and friends of this congregation with a common purpose to nurture each other in our religious community, we hereby covenant:
- To welcome everyone who comes to UUCY on an honest and responsible spiritual quest or search for community.
- To treat one another and ourselves with respect and dignity, articulating our personal boundaries when the need arises, and being mindful of confidentiality, and the imperfections and fragilities of every person.
- To speak directly to each other with loving kindness when disagreement arises or we witness inappropriate behavior or disrespectful interactions.
- To listen deeply and respond respectfully to all voices regardless of age.
- To focus our discussions on ideas, issues and solutions, rather than people or finding blame.
- To be accountable for our words, actions and commitments.
- To be mindful of others’ time and commitments, including ministers, staff and volunteers.
- To remember that building our beloved community requires active participation.
- To be grateful for this community and its purpose, reminding everyone of their worth by celebrating, sharing and laughing.
- To trust the process, accepting and supporting our leadership and group decisions while acknowledging that we may not always agree.
- Accepting and respecting that there are differences among us, to trust in the inherent good faith of each person.
- To practice forgiveness with ourselves and each other, while continuing to create an atmosphere where all can feel safe.
