Beyond Categorical Thinking By Guest Speaker Amanda Schuber
"From the earliest of ages we are taught to put things into categories ... any Sesame Street fan probably knows the famous song ... "One of these things is not like the other ... "
Helping our children understand what difference means ... and who belongs with YOU.
"I'm here to help you unpack your boxes," Schuber told the congregation.
Schuber tells the story about how she was raised to never embarrass her family ... and yet came out as a gay rights advocate on CNN at age 22.
She tells the story about how she unpacked her story for her family with limitations. She kept her story of herself on the surface.
Her family never really knew the parts of her REAL self. Once she came out as a lesbian, all her other accomplishments and talents.
"All gone by an otherness."
Schuber gives wise advice on how WE label the people in our life -- our children and others.
These "categories" we put people in may not be the real story of those we love.
How can you try and go deeper?
What part of the story are you missing?
"There's not a box big enough for our messy lives and our ever changing identities," she said.

And challenge yourself to know people beyond labels, categories and beyond boxes.
