Our UUCY Food Security Team:
- Partners with Our Daily Bread to make casseroles and serve every other month, and has an ongoing collection box in the Lobby to collect needed goods.
- Works with the UUCY Food Pantry Garden to grow and donate fresh produce to St. Paul’s Food Pantry.
- Maintains the Family Garden Program, giving members of the local community the opportunity to grow their own food, taking control of what they eat, and where it comes from.
Our Daily Bread (ODB)
Our Daily Bread (ODB), is a local soup kitchen on S. George St. near College Ave., and our involvement to it is UUCYork's longest running Social Justice commitment. The commitment started when members of UUCYork contacted ODB, found an appropriate recipe, and began supporting ODB. Today, we honor that commitment by making and serving casseroles six times a year, on the second Wednesday of odd-numbered months.
Aluminum pans for the casseroles are provided, and aprons for those that help serve as well. We are always looking to expand the number of people that can either prepare casseroles and/or helping serve. Please contact Don and Mary Beth Callow at [email protected] if you would like to be added to our email distribution list or have any questions.

Food Pantry Garden and Family Garden Plots
The Food Pantry Garden provides fresh organic vegetables for those who have limited access to fresh produce. A dedicated group of volunteers gardens the plot, and the food from that plot is donated to the St. Paul's Food Pantry. To find out how you can help in the UUCY Food Pantry Garden, contact Karen Wishart. |
The Family Gardens give members of the local community the opportunity to grow their own food, taking control of what they eat and where it comes from. People sign up for the season.
To get a Family Garden plot, for a $10 commitment and with the expectation that gardeners do all planting, watering, weeding, and harvesting on their plot in return for keeping everything they grow, contact Craig Zumbrun. Jon will set you up with a garden plot if plots are available and provide tips on how best to maintain it.
