Immigration Justice Team
UUCY’s Immigration Justice Team Leader: At this time, we are looking for a team leader for our Immigration Justice team. The Immigration Justice Team works to ensure that those who come to the United States seeking refuge and a better life receive the dignity, respect, and assistance they rightly deserve. We are asking that anyone interested in running this wonderful team effort send an email to the Social Justice committee (socialjustice@uucy.org) and join us at our next Social Justice committee meeting (3rd Wednesdays at 6:30 pm in the Leader room).
Our purpose: As Unitarian Universalists, we believe that those who come to the United States seeking refuge and a better life deserve dignity, respect, and assistance. We do not abide by the separation of families.
Our UUCY Immigration Justice Team works toward immigration justice at the local, state, and national levels. We proudly partner with CASA and UUPlan to fight for the rights of undocumented and DREAMers alike.
For ideas on community partnerships, learn how to advocate, or to get involved by joining the conversation, contact the Social Justice committee.

ESL at York County Prison
Working towards immigration justice has been a major initiative of the UUA and UUPLAN for several years. Now we have an opportunity to reach out to those people in our own community as volunteers in the prison’s ESL (English as a Second Language) program. York County prison is a major holding center for detainees with over 400 detainees awaiting trial and possible deportation. Our focus is working with detainees who have arrived from countries from all countries and students have included detainees so far are from China, Ethiopia, Somalia, and of course our Spanish speaking neighbors in the south. We work in teams of two at a time with selected detainees; teaching materials and guidance is provided by the director of the prison Education Program. NO ESL experience is required!
